Calling for shop volunteers

We’re asking local people to consider donating just a few hours of their time each week to help our shop staff raise vital funds to support local patients.

We receive around a third of its funding from the NHS, so we rely on income from donations and our trading company to carry on our work. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to many of our fundraising events and activities being postponed or cancelled, which has meant raising funds through their shops is even more important than ever to ensure we can carry on providing our specialist care.

The hospice’s ability to fundraise has been hugely impacted by the pandemic and our shops are doing really well as local hubs for people in the community to buy new or preloved goods in a safe environment.

However, we’re in real need of volunteers who can help our dedicated teams in a variety of ways. We’d love to hear from anyone who might be willing to help by giving a few hours of their time each week at any of our store locations – but particularly in Sale, Altrincham, and Edgeley.

Our online sales team and staff at our distribution centre in Reddish are also looking for support from people who could help with photography, posting and packing, and sorting goods for our shops too.

The role of a charity shop volunteer has really changed in recent years, and we see people of all ages who really benefit from the experience.  We need help with everything from window displays and merchandising, to serving customers, organising stock, and lots more in between.  There’s something to suit everyone’s needs, so please do get in touch if you might be able to help.

Gift Amnesty 2022

We’re asking people to consider donating any unwanted Christmas gifts this year to help people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Could you drop off any gifts, items of clothing, electrical goods or other items to your local hospice shop? Your donations will help raise the £20,000 St Ann’s needs to fundraise each day to keep our services running.

People often have a gift they’ve received over the festive season that either they never get round to using, or that doesn’t fit properly. Instead of leaving it to clutter up a cupboard in your house, we’d love you to consider donating it to our hospice shops where we can certainly make use of it.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s Hospice

Rachel added: “The money raised from their sale will help us to continue providing our specialist care to those who really need it, and we’d be hugely grateful for your support. The last two years have been tough for us fundraising wise, and every penny – or item – donated, really does make a big difference to the lives of our patients.”

Donation Drive Thru

People with homes brimming with unwanted Christmas gifts or boxes of items accumulated during lockdown decluttering sessions will be able to create some much-needed space, thanks to the upcoming St Ann’s  Drive-Thru donations day.

Although ‘drive-thru’ is usually a concept people apply to food and drinks, the charity has taken the in-car concept one step further, as people recycle their unwanted goods in a new and innovative way.

We’ve run many drive-thru days at our Distribution Centre in Reddish with each proving so popular that hundreds of donations were made in just a few hours.

Our Trading Company team have arranged another date on Saturday 8th January, which is perfect timing for clearing out your homes of unwanted gifts and other items in the new year after a busy festive time.

People often have gifts they’ve received over the festive season that either they never get round to using, or that doesn’t fit properly. Instead of leaving them to clutter up a cupboard in your house, we’d love you to donate them and any other items that you don’t need at our donation day drive-thru event. Items will then be sorted and sold in one of our 10 shops across Greater Manchester or our online shops. The money raised from the sale of items will help us to continue providing our specialist care to those who really need it, and we’d be hugely grateful for your support.

People can simply drive up to our distribution centre in Reddish on 8th January any time between 9am and 12noon, and leave their goods with our friendly team. It’s a really easy to find location, just off the M60, so a quick and convenient solution if you’re trying to make space at home after Christmas.

As well as being good for the environment to recycle your pre-loved goods in this way, it also means we can sell them to raise vital funds for local patients too.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s Hospice

The Drive-Thru donation day will be taking place on Saturday 8th January, at St Ann’s Hospice’s Distribution Centre, Bankfield Industrial Estate, Unit A1, Coronation Street, Reddish, SK5 7SE, and drivers can drop by any time between 9am and 12noon.

Come along to our pop up shop this December

We’re holding a pop-up shop at our Distribution Centre in Reddish on Saturday 11th December, promising bargain offers on everything from gifts and other new and pre-loved items.

The pop-up shop will be taking place at the St Ann’s Hospice Distribution Centre, Bankfield Industrial Estate, Unit A1, Coronation Street, Reddish, SK5 7SE between 9.00am and 2.00pm on Saturday 11th December.  Safety measures in accordance with government guidance are in place for all customers to follow.

It’s been a challenging time for lots of people and we’re hoping that our pop-up shop will help customers get ready for Christmas without having to break the bank.
As well as the new and pre-loved Christmas gifts on sale, we’ll also have some items of furniture, books, bric-a-brac and other goods for people to purchase.  It will be the perfect place to browse and get all set for the festive season, and we’re looking forward to seeing as many people as possible at this pop-up shop.
As well as being able to bag a bargain or two, people making purchases will also be helping St Ann’s to continue caring for patients from across Greater Manchester, and their families too. You win, and those we support win too.

Stockport wedding dress sold across the world!

One of our charity shops in Stockport was keen to make sure they could provide an online offering for brides searching for their dream wedding dress who were unable to visit shops due to the lockdowns.

The team at the bridal boutique on Great Underbank in Stockport centre shared photos of their range of brand new, designer, preloved, and vintage wedding dresses on a variety of online selling sites like eBay, Vinted and also wedding related online groups.

A lady in Australia saw one of the wedding dresses posted on a Facebook group and got in touch with the shop.

During lockdown our shops had to close so we focussed on our online platforms to sell items, including wedding dresses. We post images of the dresses on different wedding related Facebook groups and we often get interest from all over the UK but this was the furthest afield we have ever sold a dress.
A lady called Michele got in touch and we communicated back and forth over length, material, structure of the dress and I sent her lots of pictures. She said she lives in Australia but used to work in Stockport so we said it was like it was meant to be! Her god daughter came to collect the wedding dress from the shop to send over to her.

Christine Green, Shop Manager

I live in Australia and an image of the wedding dress popped up on my computer when I was on Facebook. I thought it was such a stunning dress and it was perfect for my beach wedding.
I am from England and I used to work in Stockport, so it was such a funny coincidence! Also, Stockport is where I met my partner, Roy, so I really loved the idea of it all as I’m a bit of a romancer at heart and I love the nostalgia of where it was being purchased from.
I proposed to Roy at a surprise 60th birthday party we had organised for him and the ring was tinsel but he said yes.
I just want to say thanks to Christina for the amazing service. I’m over the moon with my dress and can’t wait to wear it

Michele, Australian Bride

The wedding dress sold for £315, which is a fraction of the retail price that the dress would cost elsewhere, whilst also supporting our patients with life-limiting illnesses.

The bridal boutique was relocated from the hospice’s shop on High Street in Cheadle in April, to create more space for the number of dresses available, and meet the increased demand from customers.

As well as hundreds of dresses, the shop also has a range of other bridal accessories, such as hair accessories, bridesmaid outfits and shoes.

The store in Stockport also offers a range of vintage items for sale, as well as a specialist book shop.

To arrange a safe, socially distanced appointment with the bridal team to try on dresses or discuss your needs, call 0161 222 0576, email stockport@sah.org.uk or pop into the shop at 33 Great Underbank, Stockport, SK1 1NE

Grab 15% off New Look

New Look has launched a nationwide fundraising partnership, ‘Give back, feel good’, which offers a new customer discount initiative to support hospice care by encouraging more people to donate goods to their local hospice shops, and our charity shops in Sale and Stockport are two of the shops taking part.

The high street store will be offering a 15 per cent discount voucher to anyone who drops in a full bag of donations to our shops on School Road in Sale and on Great Underbank in Stockport. The shops are two of over 80 taking part in the programme across the UK.

Under the scheme, running in partnership with national hospice and end of life care charity, Hospice UK, donors will receive a discount code, redeemable in a local New Look store.

It’s wonderful working with New Look on this project. It helps people declutter before Christmas and do something useful with their pre-loved clothes. Every item donated to us helps us to continue to care for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, and we’re incredibly grateful for all the support we get from local people. This scheme lets them help us and get an even better deal from their local branch of New Look.

Charity shops are a lifeline to hospices up-and-down the country, allowing local communities to support them to provide much-needed to care to those who need it most.
We are really pleased to be working with New Look on the ‘Give back, feel good’ partnership, giving people the chance to raise vital funds, which hospices rely on to be able to offer outstanding care to the communities they serve.
The pandemic has really highlighted the crucial role hospices play for people at the end of life, and their families. Hospice UK continues to support hospices across the country, working alongside the NHS, to make sure people get the care they need, now and into the future.

Wanted – Furniture Donations

We have shops across Greater Manchester, including our specialist furniture shops in Ardwick and Ladybarn where we sells  range of new and pre-loved furniture items, electrical goods and homeware.

Our furniture shops are always really popular, especially in the last year when many people have been taking the opportunity to decorate or update their home during lockdown.

We have a huge amount of furniture and homewares on sale, and are appealing for donations of any items of furniture that people might be wanting to rehome.  We can arrange to pick them up if they’re bulky too, so do get in touch even if you don’t have a vehicle available to drop items at one of our shops.

We also run a popular house clearance service so if local people are moving, downsizing or have a garage or other unit that they need help clearing, we can support with that too. We’re always happy to help, and people can also be assured that the money raised from the sale of the items they donate will help St Ann’s continue caring for local patients.

We’re inviting deal-lovers to visit our Distribution Centre in Reddish on Saturday 18th September to get their hands on some of the hundreds of new and pre-loved items up for sale.

Our centre in Reddish is a bit of a treasure trove to be honest, and it’s packed full of everything from ladies wear and accessories to toys, games, electrical goods and homeware. There really is something for everyone.
Since our shops have reopened post-lockdown we’ve had some amazing stock donated, including lots of new goods from generous supporters. Some we sell in our shops, some on our online stores, and we’ve also decided to save some of the best bargains for our Distribution Centre sale in September.
Shoppers will not only be able to get their hands on some great deals, but the money they pay will also help St Ann’s to care for hospice patients from across Greater Manchester.
As a charity we need to raise £20,000 a day to keep our services running for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, so sales like this one, alongside those made in our shops, are invaluable.  They really do help us make a huge difference to local people’s lives.
