Gerard’s Lottery win

Gerard, who has lived in Heald Green for the past 50 year, got a great surprise when he opened the envelope to discover that he had won the jackpot in our Hospice Lottery.

Gerard has been a supporter of St Ann’s for a long time now and he regularly donates goods to be sold in our charity shops.

I could not believe it. I have been in the lottery over 25 years, had a couple of small wins but this is great. Our two grandchildren have just started University so the money will be used to help them with their lodging fees.

Gerard Pilling

We’ve recently announced that, for the first time since our lottery launched almost 25 years ago, supporters are able to purchase tickets in any of our fourteen shops around Greater Manchester. Our team has also revamped the prize structure of the weekly lottery, meaning an increased prize pot for local people to potentially get their hands on.

So, in addition to our weekly jackpot of £2,000, we are also now offering a rollover prize of £1,000 a week, up to a maximum of £10,000, and other weekly prizes of £50 for four winners, and £10 for 30 winners too!

Hacienda memorabilia up for grabs in charity auction

Aficionados of Manchester’s rich musical heritage are set to battle it out to get their hands on a piece of Madchester memorabilia.

On Sunday 20th October an original cocktail menu poster hung near the bar in The Gay Traitor, the cocktail bar attached to the world-famous Hacienda night club, will be listed on eBay, with all proceeds raised going to St Ann’s Hospice.

The authenticated piece of Hacienda history is certain to appeal to collectors of Factory Records memorabilia. It was discovered by eagle-eyed volunteers in a box of items donated to St Ann’s.

This is an amazing chance for someone to win a real slice of Manchester’s musical history. The poster has been authenticated by a former graphic designer and event promoter connected to the Hacienda and we have been told it is most likely one of the reprints ordered by the club around 1986/87. It’s in very good condition as it’s been kept rolled up in a cardboard tube since it was removed from the bar. There are just a few light creases and some marks on the back that are probably from where it’s been stuck into a frame. We’re hoping for a lot of interest from music fans across Greater Manchester and beyond so that we can raise as much money as possible for St Ann’s Hospice from the sale.

John Neill, Online Sales Manager at St Ann’s Hospice

The poster is listed on eBay and the auction will run for seven days until Sunday 27th October. Bidding starts at £249.00. Click here to view the poster.

Drive Thru Donation Success

The words ‘drive-thru’ usually bring to mind images of fast food and takeaway coffees, but we trialled a brand new way for people to recycle their unwanted items last month, which proved so popular we have already confirmed more dates – Saturday 26th October and Saturday 16th November.

The concept is simple – people drive up to our distribution centre in Reddish between 10am and 3pm on 26th October or 16th November, and our friendly team will unload everything quickly so they can be on their way. It’s just off the M60, so really convenient, and we hope it will be an easy solution for people who want to recycle or declutter, but aren’t able to head to a charity shop, park up, and carry lots of bulky items, bags or boxes.
The items will all be put to really good use as we have fourteen shops across Greater Manchester, as well as a busy eBay shop too. We sell both new and preloved goods, and are always happy to receive donations such as furniture homeware and clothing.
The money raised from the sale of the items will help the hospice to support local patients, so it’s not only great for the environment to recycle things you no longer need, it will also have a real impact on people’s lives too.

Amanda Brooks, Head of Trading Company at St Ann’s

The Drive-Thru Donations day will be taking place at our Distribution Centre, Bankfield Industrial Estate, Unit A1, Coronation Street, Reddish, SK5 7SE, and drivers can drop by any time between 10am and 3pm on 26th October or 16th November.

Celebration night to honour Linda’s memory

The charity event on Saturday, November 16, is organised by son Tabe Obaide to raise funds for St Ann’s who cared for her over a long period.

Mum-of-three Linda (54), who worked at Manchester Royal Infirmary, died in December 2015 and had been diagnosed with cancer 10 years earlier.

Tabe, brother  Nabeel and sister Afifa, are asking for donations for a raffle and silent auction.

It’ll be an informal, fun evening with music and dancing and the more the merrier.

That’s what my mum would have liked. I’ll never be able to repay St Ann’s for their care, but I’ll do my best. Doctors initially gave her less than 18 months to live but she refused to give up.

She looked after everyone else before herself and would give the bin men, postman and lollipop man a present at Christmas. Of all the medical care she received, she had the best experience at St Ann’s in Heald Green where the staff were so friendly and attentive.

Tabe , Linda’s son

A signed Man Utd shirt, weekend break and pamper day are among the many prizes being collected. Tickets at £20 are available from Tabe on 07764 997204 or email tabebadey@hotmail.com.

Celebration Tree unveiled at our Little Hulton hospice

The beautiful copper sculpture decorated with gold, silver and bronze leaves and birds was commissioned to help mark 40 years of specialist palliative care in Little Hulton.

The plaques are dedicated to someone special and can be engraved with their names. They may have been a patient, or have worked or volunteered at St Ann’s

The Ceremonial Mayor Cllr Charlie McIntyre joined families and friends of patients at the unveiling in the hospice reception on Wednesday, October 9, 2019.

Peter Tonge, District Secretary, attended the unveiling representing Salford Masons, who have generously funded the tree as part of their on-going support for the charity, meaning that all donations can directly benefit patient care. Also in attendance was last year’s Ceremonial Mayor of Salford Cllr Ronnie Wilson whose donation as part of the Community Chest grant from the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford’s Charity Appeal funded a bird plaque for the tree.

Michael was an inpatient at St Ann’s which did a wonderful job. I feel in my comfort zone when I walk in here.

Helen Molloy, Bought a leaf in memory of husband Michael who died of cancer in March.

This is a way of remembering my aunt and helping the hospice which couldn’t do enough for her when she was a patient. The staff were fabulous.

Gillian Allport (Niece of Ruby Thompson), The family of Ruby Thompson, from Astley, who died of cancer in April, have donated towards a plaque.

Hopefully the tree will blossom as more of our supporters celebrate the life of someone special. The tree also recognises the 40th anniversary of our Little Hulton hospice where we continue to provide care and support to local people when they need help most.

Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s Hospice

Plaques remain on the tree for a year and donors can then renew their donation or take them home.

Leaves cost £50 minimum yearly, or £4.16 monthly, over a minimum 12-month period. Bird plaques are £500 annually or £41.66 if paid monthly.

Alpacas bring smiles to hospice patients

When it comes to supporting patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, an alpaca probably isn’t the first thing you’d think of. But, patients at St Ann’s were treated to a very special visit from alpacas Raphael and Wolfie, who joined them in the hospice gardens this week.

Personalised, holistic care is so important to everyone at the hospice, and this kind of therapy is just one of the ways we try to improve the wellbeing of our patients. It was wonderful for everyone to meet Raphael and Wolfie and see how much our patients enjoyed spending time with them.  It’s days like this that really do create wonderful memories for everyone involved, and we’d like to thank Cheshire Alpacas for making the visit possible. Hospices support people right through their illness, from the point of diagnosis, through treatment, and beyond, and we’re proud to always go the extra mile to ensure that the people that come to be cared for at St Ann’s have the very best quality of life possible.  It was fantastic to see everyone smiling as they met the two alpacas, and to see the real impact their visit had on their day. Thanks again to everyone involved.

Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s

During the visit, Raphael and Wolfie the alpacas, met patients, staff and volunteers in the hospice’s courtyard, and went to bedroom windows so that people on the wards who were unable to leave their beds could also see them.

I love animals so I really enjoyed meeting the alpacas. They were really friendly and calm. This week I turn 70 years old so it was a fabulous way to celebrate and the staff at St Ann’s also made me a birthday cake.

Lynn Spencer, Patient in Being You Centre

Alpacas are such gentle-natured, beautiful, friendly and sociable animals. You just cannot help but smile when you’re around them, which is why we love bringing them to places like St Ann’s Hospice. We love seeing everybody’s happy smiley faces when they’re in the company of our alpacas. It makes what we do very rewarding. Thank you for having us St Ann’s Hospice!️

The Howard Charity Gala

Mel was diagnosed with lung cancer and attended St Ann’s Hospice in Little Hulton initially as a day care patient before her condition deteriorated and she became an inpatient where she died aged 52 in December 2016.

The fundraising event, in her memory, will take place at Albert’s Worsley on Saturday October 12. Tickets are £35 and include a BBQ buffet, entertainment from a saxophonist and DJ, plus there will be a raffle and auction to raise more money on the night.

This year the special event will take place four days after Mel’s 55th birthday, so the event will be even more poignant and she will be the toast of family and friends at the gala to celebrate her life.

It’s not just Faye, who has been fundraising for St Ann’s, her dad, Paul, has taken part in many different sporting events over the year which has contributed to their total.

The care my mum received at St Ann’s was truly amazing, it was really personal to her and the doctors and nurses really tailored everything to her needs and wishes. As a family we were all made to feel welcome and we were able to stay over in one of the family rooms. The last two events have been really great nights and everyone really gets behind raising money for St Ann’s. Last year the DJ even managed to auction off a tin of beans for £45! I think we’ve already raised over £10,000 from the gala and sporting events and our target is to raise £20,000, as we want to be able to help pay for a day of care.

St Ann’s teams up with The Kindling Trust

We teamed up with The Kindling Trust, a social enterprise which runs Woodbank Community Food Hub in Woodbank Memorial Park, Stockport.

Kindling’s horticultural initiative includes the FarmStart programme which has already supplied lettuces to the kitchens at St Ann’s in Heald Green with more vegetable deliveries expected.

FarmStart offers supported growing and training for those who want to turn organic vegetable growing into a commercial operation. Vegetables grown there supplies the largest local veg box scheme and top restaurants in Greater Manchester.

The site buzzes with activity from Stockport beekeepers to community gardeners and commercial growers.

Our aim is to create a new generation of local organic growers because we need to change the culture of farming. We help growers set up their own projects in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way and are a hub for enterprises which provide affordable, fresh locally grown produce.

Helen Dodd , Farmstart Co-ordinator

We’re looking forward to developing our relationship with The Kindling Trust, offering our patients the highest quality food while supporting local food producers.

We’ll continue to support our local community and longer term would like to have an organic vegetable and sensory garden at the hospice. We recognise that gardening is a therapeutic exercise which our patients can benefit from greatly.
